It's Official! The Pavilion is Ready for the Public!

Veteran's Memorial Park Pavilion is at your service.

It was a dark and stormy day. The anglers at the fishing derby huddled beneath makeshift shelters in their rain slicks and boots, sipping hot cocoa and coffee in a futile attempt to stay warm. A pair of intrepid yellow labs frolicked on the beach, racing in and out of the water chasing sticks thrown by their master, who shivered on the shore. April 23. After the winter that tested the spirit of every living creature in the Bethwood area, would spring ever come, we all wonder?

Well, as of today, even if spring can't be bothered to grace us with her gentle presence, we can all look forward to summer on Bethany Lake, because this morning, in the cold, drenching rain, the ribbon cutting for the new pavilion happened in spite of the weather, much like the stubborn daffodils simply couldn't wait for real sunshine and burst opened last week in spite of the 30 degree nights.

"This has been a long time coming," said First Selectman Derrylyn Gorski. "I'm thrilled. We've already got 15 rentals booked."

There are still a few odds and ends to attend to, such as ordering and installing tables as well as a stove and cooler for the kitchen. However, the covered pavilion is ready for picnickers, and the bathrooms are open.

And the best part, aside from the view of the park? Everything was built using grant money.

"I think a lot more people will start using the lake," Gorski said.

But all this reporter can think about is . . . how in the world is that guy gonna get those two soaking wet dogs home without actually putting them in his car? I would walk down to the beach to ask, but unlike everyone else, I forgot my rain slicker. That question will have to wait for another day . . .
