Writer's Workshop by Award Winning Author

Do you have a great story to tell?

With the advent of technology, social media and self-publishing, many people – particularly women – are following their dream to write. For some it’s a personal passion. For others it’s a professional pursuit. Still others want to learn how to get started. Many baby boomers, in fact, list writing a book as one of their top “to dos” on their bucket lists!

Bethany resident and published author/editor Anne Witkavitch will lead two workshops for writers at the on Saturday, February 11. The workshops are based on Anne’s essays in the upcoming release, Women Writing on Family: Tips for Writing, Teaching and Publishing, co-edited by Suzann Holland and Carol Smallwood and published by The Key Publishing House.

“We grow up being told to write what we know,” says Witkavitch. “Writing about our own experiences is a good place to start. But it’s not always as easy as it looks!”

The first workshop, “The Parent Trap: Five Mistakes to Avoid When Writing about Family” runs 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and focuses on the personal essay. While many writers find that their families provide plenty of material to write about, translating the event or experience into a story with universal appeal can be a challenge. The workshop will focus on the five most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

The second workshop, “CyberMoms: Opportunities for Women Writers on the Web” runs 12 noon to 1:15 p.m. and explores the growing demand on the web for women who write. The session will include matching online markets to an individual’s writing style, showcasing talent on blogs and websites, and using technology to manage productivity and track progress.

Workshops are for all abilities, from those starting out to published writers. The web workshop may also appeal to professionals who want to explore publishing online in order to build a platform and promote their subject matter expertise.

The sessions are being held to celebrate Love Your Library Month and are free. Participants may attend one or both workshops.
