Bethwood Patch In

We Haven’t Really Come a Long Way, Baby

The current ‘war between women’ pitting Hilary Rosen against Ann Romney is deflecting attention from the true ‘war ON women’ and distracting us from the real question—Who are we voting for?

[Editor's Note: Please keep an eye out later this week for "Patch Back," a new feature from Lisa Bigelow that will serve as response piece to certain installments of Heather's "Patch In."]  The question isn’t whether Ann Romney ever ‘worked’ a day in her whole life, but: Does her husband Mitt truly give a rat’s ass about anyone—especially women—in the 99 percent? This made-up battle between working moms and stay-at-home-moms is causing people of every gender to lose focus on more important issues—namely whether politicians are advocating stripping rights from women (like reproductive health choices) or finding ways to penalize them and hold them back (withholding equal pay) or simply having a double standard when it comes to lower- vs. …

My thought as a woman..don't tell me how to vote, or who is the better candidate..I decide that for myself. Some women are Republicans, some are Democrats and some are Independents. We may all have different opinions. We don't have to think alike! Get use to it!   more ›

Survey: McMahon Leads GOP Primary, Dems Still Win

A Quinnipiac poll breaks down the U.S. Senate race and Republican presidential primary.

A Quinnipiac University poll shows Linda McMahon leads former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays by a 51-42 margin, but falters against Democrats compared to her opponent. In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5, leads with 37 of the vote, followed by former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz with 25 percent and State Rep. William Tong with 4 percent. Polling results for possible November matchups: “Congressman Christopher Shays has narrowed the gap with Linda McMahon from 15 points to 9 points.  The question is whether he can catch up by primary day, August 14,” said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. “In general election matchups, Shays runs neck and neck with either Congressman Christopher…

Local Election Results Seen as Barometer for 2012

After Connecticut's local elections come and go with political changes on both sides, the parties look to the big 2012 elections.

In Milford, a Democrat took city hall for the first time in 22 years. In East Haven, a Republican eked out the incumbent by 31 votes. Victories from all over the state were claimed on Nov. 8, and both political parties are auguring their fortunes from the results. “These [elections] that happen locally are often indicative of larger trends,” said Eric Hyers, executive director of the Democratic Party of Connecticut. “I think you can view [the results for Democrats] in great confidence moving into a presidential year. We’re very excited about some of the towns we were able to win.” As expected, Democrats won mayoral elections in the biggest cities, but also claimed spots in cities like New Britain and Middletown. Hyers said the party’s hold…

Capitol DisPatch: CT

Lawmakers Hope for High Turnout on Election Day

A look at what some lawmakers are thinking - and doing - in Hartford.

In light of last week’s Civic Health Index and because Tuesday is Election Day, Capitol DisPatch asked lawmakers the importance of local elections. Connecticut was the first of the 13 colonies to adopt a constitution, “The Fundamental Orders of 1639”. That explains the moniker “The Constitution State” and the state’s tradition of representative government, according to the newly released Civic Health Index. The state’s 169 towns and municipalities shed county government in the 1960s, a move that created unique challenges.  Last week Secretary of the State Denise Merrill told Capitol DisPatch much work must be done to get more people to vote and to encourage more people to register to vote. This week, lawmakers hope the public turns out for…

DeLauro to Run for Reelection in 2012

Longtime Congressman tells Naugatuck Patch she will seek a 12th term in the district that includes New Haven, Waterbury and Naugatuck.

U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro has announced she will run for reelection to the 3rd Congressional District seat in 2012. In an email to Naugatuck Patch on Monday, DeLauro spokesman Kaelan Richards confirmed the 20-year incumbent would seek a 12th term as the representative for the House of Representatives district, which stretches from the New Haven region to Naugatuck and Waterbury. DeLauro’s statement comes shortly after Republican Wayne Winsley, a motivational speaker from Naugatuck, announced he would run for the 3rd Congressional seat also. “I welcome his candidacy and anyone else that might be interested in running,” DeLauro said in an email to Patch. “I will be working on getting the economy back on track here in Connecticut, and getting …

Good for Rosa. She won by the largest margin of any Democrat running for Congress in Connecticut in 2010. Is she that good or was her opponent that bad?   more ›

Revised AP Figures Now Show Malloy in Lead

Democrat Dan Malloy was declared the unofficial victor in a tight governor's race, but the Associated Press and Republican Tom Foley aren't convinced.

Update - Nov. 4, 2:00 a.m.: The latest figures from the Associated Press show Republican Tom Foley clinging to an 8,424 vote lead. But those numbers haven't yet been confirmed by state officials, and 11 precincts—including 10 in Democratic-leaning Bridgeport—have yet to report their results. HARTFORD — Claiming victory over his opponent's calls for a recount, unofficial governor-elect Dan Malloy addressed a cheering crowd in Hartford late Wednesday afternoon, bringing to an awkward pause a contentious state race that was too close to call overnight. Malloy announced he would name Tim Bannon, the current president and executive director of the Board of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, as his chief of staff.  Bannon, a 1977 …

Update: Race for Governor Still Undetermined

Foley, Malloy remain optimistic as race tightens.

Editor's Note: Patch will continue to update you on this race as results come in. Update 1:42 am Malloy told his supporters at around 1:10 am that it "appears that we may enjoy a victory tonight." Malloy appeared on stage with his running mate Nancy Wyman and a procession of bagpipers preceded his announcement. Malloy also told supporters that he respected Foley's right to contest the election results. Update 1:11 am In a quick speech in front of his supporters, Foley apologized for the long wait and announced that, although he and his camp think he's ahead of Malloy in terms of votes, he does not want to declare himself the winner since all of the votes have not been counted. He said, however, that he "is quite confident that he will …
