AARP Recognizes Crisco with Award

State Senator has shown outstanding leadership in state's health insurance issues

State Senator Joseph J. Crisco, Jr. (D-Woodbridge), Senate Chairman of the legislature’s Insurance and Real Estate Committee, received a Legislative Achievement Award Monday from the state chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

Crisco's award is “in recognition of his outstanding leadership on Connecticut’s state health insurance exchange, which will provide a marketplace for consumers to shop competitively for quality, affordable health insurance,” according to the AARP.

Senator Crisco was presented with a plaque at a luncheon ceremony Monday to denote the recognition. His legacy as Chairman of the Insurance Committee underscores his work to protect consumers’ rights and extend Connecticut’s legacy as the #1 insurance state. Healthcare access and affordability are his paramount concerns.

In addition to creation of the state’s Insurance Exchange, which will function as a clearinghouse for businesses and insurance consumers to compare and contrast insurance options, other highlights of Senator Crisco’s 2011 legislative achievements include required insurance coverage for bone marrow compatibility testing and for clinical trials for patients with chronic, progressive, or debilitating disease, and the healthcare pooling initiative, designed to use economies of scale to bring down the cost of health insurance.

“I have long admired the efforts of AARP to safeguard the health and well-being of senior citizens and to try and do so through expanded insurance options and coverage, which coincides with the legislative work I’m committed to pursuing,” Senator Crisco said. “It is gratifying to be recognized by this esteemed group and I appreciate the kindness I’ve received.”

“Going forward, my pledge is to continue working on these issues to expand access to Connecticut’s healthcare delivery network, and to ensure the high quality of available healthcare,” Senator Crisco added.

Senator Crisco is serving his tenth term in the General Assembly. In addition to his responsibility for the Insurance Committee he is vice chair of the Banks Committee and Commerce Committee, Ranking Member of the Internship Committee, and serves on the Legislative Management Committee and Executive and Legislative Nominations Committee.
