Meriden Woman Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges

Authorities take possession of several animals who were reportedly not properly cared for.

A Meriden woman has been arrested on three counts of cruelty to animals, according to the state Department of Agriculture.

The woman, who authorities identified as Maureen Kenney of 707 Hanover St., Meriden, was taken into custody toay on an outstanding warrant. The arrest stems from a lengthy investigation by the Department of Agriculture's Animal Control Division into the care of animals owned by Kenney.

On May 13, 2011, the Department of Agriculture seized 10 horses, two goats, five rabbits, one duck, three dogs, and two cats from two Meriden properties where Kenney housed animals.

"The Department worked with Ms. Kenney to improve the care given to the animals so that they could remain safely on the property," said Agriculture Commissioner Steven K. Reviczky. "Ultimately, we had to intervene and remove the animals to ensure their health and welfare. They are now receiving proper care and their conditions have improved greatly."

Kenney was scheduled to be arraigned today in Meriden Superior Court.
