Notes In A Nutshell: Town Plans 9/11 Memorial

Notes from the July meeting of the Board of Selectmen.

A brief summary of what was discussed at Wednesday night’s Woodbridge Board of Selectmen meeting for those who want to know what's happening, but can't make it to the meetings.

  • Fire Chief Sean Rowland presented to the board a plan to construct a World Trade Center Memorial at the new fire station using a piece of metal from the New York City site. Unveiling is planned for Sunday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m.
  • Massaro Farm is having a blockbuster summer. Last year, the farm donated over 4,000 lbs. of produce and that number is expected to be eclipsed this summer. Volunteers have logged over 1,000 hours so far this season. The farm stand is waiting for tomatoes to reach perfect ripeness and next Saturday may be the day.
  • Resident Shae Belenski presented a plan to clear a trail near the corn fields as part of an Eagle Scout project. Permission was granted by the board.
  • Former Fire Chief Andrew Esposito was presented with a proclamation commending him for his 30 years of service with the town. Esposito retired this spring.
  • Town Finance Director Anthony Genovese reported that the town ended the fiscal year with a surplus of $336,000. Both the police department and fire department had a surplus at the close of the year. Waste management saw a $80,000 savings over budgetary allotments. Human Services, the Recreation Department and the Board of Education also closed the year having not spent all of their budgeted amounts.
  • The town received a reimbursement for snow removal totalling $48,475.31.
  • The board accepted a Small Cities Grant for ADA improvments for $730,000. The money will be spent on an elevator and ADA compliant bathroom at the old firehouse and an ADA accessible bathroom at the Senior Center.
  • The town received a $290,000 grant from the Greater New Haven Transit District for sidewalks on Bradley Road.
