Thousands May be Trapped by Hurricane Sandy's Flooding

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says the Hurricane Katrina-like situation has thousands of Connecticut residents from Greenwich to Old Saybrook trapped in their homes with flood waters rising and no where to go.

Thousands of people are trapped in their homes, in a possible Katrina-like situation along Connecticut’s shoreline tonight, from Greenwich to Old Saybrook, and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is urging them to stay in their homes and move to higher levels to stay alive.

In an urgent and hastily called press briefing tonight, the governor said thousands of shoreline residents, or their leaders, did not heed numerous and dire warnings state officials have issued over the past several days for residents in shoreline communities to leave their homes before Hurricane Sandy’s winds forced the waters of Long Island Sound to historic flood levels.

Now, Malloy said, those residents have no choice but to stay put and try to survive the night in their dwellings as the flood waters rise. Leaving now is not an option and poses a greater risk to them, Malloy said.

“Get to a higher floor, as high as you have to. Don’t be near a window because there’s a lot of wind and there’s nothing good to see at this point. Do not try to walk through (the water). Don’t try to swim through it do not try to drive through it.

“Our worst fears are being reached in terms of flooding conditions,” he said.

Malloy said he would assess later why so many people are stranded in their homes along the shoreline, despite numerous warnings by officials, including those in his office, that the storm was catastrophic and residents should leave. But he left open the idea that local leaders may not have heeded the warnings and may not have carried it to their citizenry.

i find it offensive to compare this storm to Katrina, which went from a category 5 to 3 when it hit landfall in New Orleans, NOLA is below the sea level, had levees breaking and causing massive flooding to 20 ft and higher and winds beyond 95 miles per hour. My daughter experienced Katrina and other hurricanes in NOLA. Yes this is dangerous but the loss of lives is nothing compared to Katrina....Also these people had several days to prepare not 24 hrs like Katrina. That is why Malloy is so hard on teachers, his facts are askew. Maybe private school education isn't what it's cracked up to be. Maybe he should have gone to a public school.

They only have their homes as financial asset and insurance does not cover flooding unfortunately. So they chose to stay and ensure to try to pump water out and ensure there are no looters to take their possessions. Hard decision to make.

Not only are the lives of the rescuers at risk but the lives of others who encounter unforseen emergencies. The help they need may be delayed by the behavior of these idiots. In my opinion anyone who ignores a mandatory evacuation order, and subsequently "requires' rescuing, should, at the very least, be charged for the service.

5th Grade Annex Building

A disgrace to the children of our community - INDEED! I completely understand this is "a"Read More situation and was not expected and is being taken care off in the best possible way. However, i just dont get why it took so long to address the root cause of this situation. What does it take for the town, it's admisnistration to value the need for better facilities for our children. Why does it become such a daunting task when all of the assesments have come back suggesting the need to move the kids out of the annex buildings? Wake up town of Bethany, it is in our hands to provide our kids with better infrastructure. We should have done it yesterday, when the building commitee brings forth it's recommendations, it is our turn to di it RIGHT!

Heather, thank you for posting this article. My child's classroom is the one pictured above.Read More Everything you have stated is correct. Our children are basically walking on dried toilet water. The administration has a good heart but not a good response. They do the 'bear minimum' for the annex kids who have to deal with the daily torture of their environment.
Tom Cigas June 14, 2013 at 04:24 pm
Heather, VERY well-stated. You hit the nail on the head! These annex buildings ARE a disgrace.Read More They provide neither a healthy environment nor a secure environment for the students and teachers. Whether the Town decides to build another addition to the school or to utilize space at the Middle School (and I'm not so sure that's a great idea), something needs to be done as quickly as possible. If we can afford to replace our old Amity Rd. firehouse with a beautiful, modern edifice, we can afford to do the right thing for the kids.
