Community Corner

'Walk for Japan' Fundraiser Saturday, May 14

Event is sponsored by the Woodbridge Recreation Department

The Woodbridge Recreation Department is supporting a fundraiser for victims of the recent tsunami in Japan. The "Walk for Japan" fundraiser will take place at the cornfield May 14 (raindate of 6/4/11) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

According to event organizer, Andrea Weinstein, all proceeds will go to the UNICEF Children's Fund.  There is no fee for participation, nor need for pledges.

"The community is invited to come and walk, bring baked goods to sell, with all proceeds going to Japan, and/or donate to the fund via check or cash," says Weinstein. This event stems from her participation as a member of the Woodbridge Recreation Commission.

"I started an informal community walk approximately 2 1/2 years ago with the goal to promote "community" and for all to "unwind" from everyone's busy week by taking time to walk and talk," she explains. The group meets weekly at the cornfield most Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. The group also walks at The Kucinskas Loop at Beecher Road School from time to time and all are welcome to join.

"With the devasting aftermath of the tsunami and earthquakes in Japan I thought it important for our small community to impact the global community in a positive way," Weinstein says. "I know there have been many fundraisers.  This Walk for Japan is yet another way for children, adults, and families to come together as a community and make a difference."
