Woodbridge Golf Commission Causes Controversy

First selectman seeks recommendations and nominations

The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved the establishment of a new seven-member Golf Commission to oversee operations at thethis week.

The proposal came under scrutiny from members of the public, other town commissions and even the board of selectmen.

Selectman Gregory Coyne said, "The commission should focus on running the club, not on an exit strategy."

First Selectman Edward Sheehy said he plans to ask the commission to look at options for ownership or management. The town bought the country club in 2009 for $6.9 million. Beginning in 2012, the town will pay $350,000 annually toward the purchase.

Conservation Commission Chairperson Maria Kayne urged the board to use discretion while choosing members to sit on this commission: "The town bought a failing golf course and to give it back to the same people would be a disservice to the town."

"I agree with the formation of the commission," said Selectman Thomas Kenefick. "The public needs a place to come when they have concerns."

The commission will be responsible for acting as the agent to the board of selectmen in matters related to the operation, maintenance and management of the town-owned country club.

The Board of Selectmen is looking for residents with golf, business and general management experience to join the commission. Resumes may be sent to the first selectman's office at 11 Meetinghouse Lane in Woodbridge.
