On the First Day of Christmas... Gus

Gus exemplifies the mutual reward realized by both a dog and an adopter when a special person extends their home to a senior Greyhound.

Gus, a nine year old white/black male, was returned to REGAPCT with his two sisters, Abby and Rosie, after the unfortunate passing of their owner. It was clear that the loss of their owner was hard on all three of the Greyhounds. They were all such sweet dogs and my heart went out to them.

I can say from my own experiences as an owner that having a senior Greyhound fills your heart with joy, but that finding the right home for each senior Greyhound can sometimes be a challenge. I couldn’t have known that after a few months with REGAPCT, Gus would land in a new home that was a perfect fit for him.

The adopter was no stranger to REGAPCT. A little more than a year earlier, he had adopted another senior Greyhound, Mojo. And after thirteen wonderful months together, we were all sad to learn of Mojo’s passing in October 2013. When the adopter heard about Gus and his unfortunate situation, he felt compelled to meet him. Gus and his new owner hit it off immediately and it felt as though this was the person destined to rescue Gus from all the hardships he had weathered.

The adopter was excited to get Gus home to meet his two new brothers, Theodore and Defender, and to see how they would respond to each other.  They immediately took to each other, and within a few minutes Gus was in the house relaxing and enjoying his new dog bed. It was extremely heartwarming to hear of the bond Theodore, who is totally blind, developed with Gus.  Gus serves as a wonderful guide to Theodore, and with Gus at his side, Theodore quickly became more confident in the yard. Gus shows his appreciation for his wonderful new home by burying his head in his owner’s lap, or by leaning up against him.

Thanks to the kindness of this adopter who once again opened his home to a senior Greyhound in desperate need, Gus will be celebrating Christmas today with his two brothers and is looking forward to taking long snoozes on his bed next to the heating vent.
