On the Twelfth Day of Christmas... Buster, Axel and Abby

These past days of sharing the stories of the Twelve Greys of Christmas have been fun. For those Greyhound people who have shared the journey, I hope you have enjoyed the stories while snuggling up with your own Greyhound(s). For those of you who had Greyhounds featured in this series, REGAPCT thanks you. Without you providing the wonderful “forever homes” for the stars of this series, none of these success stories would be possible.

For those who have followed this journey and are not Greyhound owners, I hope the stories have been enlightening. I strive to share the joys of Greyhound ownership with everyone I come in contact with and I am always delighted when new potential adopters show interest in the breed. I promise that if you adopt one of these wonderful dogs, you will immediately fall in love.

So while the other eleven days have brought you stories of Greyhounds who have found their “forever homes”, it would be remiss of me not to share the stories of Greys who are still awaiting the right adopters to fall in love with them and take them home.

As I explained in my introduction to this series, the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas marks the Epiphany, or the time the Wise Men, or Magi, arrived to present gifts to the young Jesus. And while there is some disagreement about the historical accuracy of there being three Wise Men, there just happens to currently be three lovely adoptable Greys looking for a home. So, for the purposes of literary convenience, I will be maintaining the theme of "three". And besides, three is the magic number.

Regardless of the actual number of Wise Men, we are told that the Wise Men brought three gifts; gold, incense, and myrrh.

Gold; like the golden personality of Buster, a retired black and white male who is eager to please. He has retired from a short but good career on the track. He came to REGAPCT with his leg still in a cast and has spent his first weeks of retirement recovering from a racing injury. With the cast off and the leg healed, he is ready to go home. He is a very sweet and outgoing puppy who would make a wonderful Grey for first time adopters and chippers alike.

Incense, an aromatic material that, when burned, gives off a fragrant smoke that fills its surroundings with pleasantness. Much in the way Axel, a four year old dark brindle male, fills his surroundings with pleasantness. Axel is a sweet boy that loves attention. He loves people and prefers human companionship only second to his squeaky toys. He is very playful and, because he has already experienced a home, he can quickly adapt to joining a family setting.

And myrrh, another aromatic substance which is used in perfumes, but also, because of its healing properties, is used for several medicinal purposes. Like Abby, who was recently returned (along with Gus) because of the passing of her owner. She is such a sweet girl that just having her around can have its own healing properties. She is very outgoing and loves to be in the company of her human companions. She is a cuddle bug who especially loves to be on the couch with people. And at nine years old, she is active for her age and would be a very special addition to any family.

As the holiday season passes and we ring in a new year, we should be reminded of the hope that springs from giving. Giving is a selfless act that makes us feel good. Giving a Greyhound a "forever home" is one of the best gifts you could ever give. And as many Greyhound owners will tell you, the gift of having a Greyhound as a part of your life is even greater.
