Congregation B’nai Jacob’s Lunch & Learn presents Lincoln Scholar

How did Lincoln understand the Civil War? Who or

what was to blame? What is the role of God in history and the role of the

statesman in time of crisis?

B’nai Jacob proudly welcomes Yale Professor Steven Smith, who will present his
acclaimed lecture, “How to Read Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address”.   Smith
will consider the place of religion, the Bible and political thought through a close reading of one of Lincoln’s most profound speeches.
This lecture marks the first of several insightful Lunch & Learns presentations to be held at CBJ in the coming
year.

A winner of many academic awards and prizes, Smith has taught at Yale since 1984 and is the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science. He has served as the director of the special program in the humanities, acting chair of Judaic
Studies, and, from 1996 to 2011, as the master of Branford College. His
research has focused on the history of political philosophy with special attention to the problem of the ancients and moderns, the relation of religion and politics, and theories of representative government.

Smith's presentation will take place in the
Library, immediately following Saturday Service and Kiddush (approximately
12:45 pm.)  The entire community is
welcome to attend this informative program. For more info, please go to www.bnaijacob.org/
