The Amity community is mourning the death of Eva Block.

A tragic fire in Poughkeepsie, NY claimed the life of a much loved 2008 Amity grad early Saturday morning.

Eva Block, 21, of Woodbridge, a student at Marist College in New York was inside a house that she shared with five other female students when a fire broke out sometime after 1 a.m., Jan. 21.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, "Fairview Fire Chief Chris Maeder said the house was nearly engulfed in flames when he arrived about four minutes after the 1:33 a.m. alarm. he said firefighters tried to go in to the house but were forced back outside by smoke and heat."

The paper stated that four people, two males and two females escaped through windows, but three others, two female Marist students and a male friend did not make it out.

As of Sunday, the names of the victims had not yet officially been released by police, but friends had flooded Eva's Facebook page with loving messages and family friends and others who know them from their ties to Congregation Or Shalom in Orange confirmed that Eva is one of the Marist students who died in the fire.

One former Amity classmate wrote on her Facebook wall, "I am heartbroken about this news. May god bless your soul. My heart and prayers are with your family and friends. You will never be forgotten ♥"

Her mother posted this message on Eva's Facebook wall:

"Thank you to each of you for taking the time to remember my Eva and for keeping her and our family in your prayers. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Monday January 23, beginning 1 pm., at Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home at 88 Beach Rd., Fairfield, Ct 203-255-8993."
