Massaro Community Farm New Foodcorps Host Site

Massaro Community Farm has been appointed one of only six new Foodcorps sites across the state of Connecticut beginning this fall. Foodcorps is a national program (similar to Americorps) which places motivated service members in need-based communities for a year of public service. Service members work closely with organizations in the community to teach kids about healthy food and where it comes from, help build school gardens, and work with schools to source food locally.

Foodcorps is relatively new, currently finishing its second year of service programs across the U.S. Adding new service members and sites across the country is closely monitored, which is why we are even more pleased to be named a host site. Our Foodcorps service member will be working closely with farm staff to carry out priorities primarily in neighboring Ansonia.

Participation in this program dovetails with the farm's engagement over the last 12 months with VITAHLS, a Valley initiative led by Griffin Hospital to improve health and nutrition awareness among youth by working closely with school districts.  The farm would not be able to host the Foodcorps service member without the support of Griffin Hospital's Prevention Research Center and Jones Family Farms. Stay tuned for updates this fall from our Foodcorps service member!
