Hy Hyatt, 95

Mr. Hyatt enlisting in the U.S. Army the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and served as a Ranger in World War II, attached to General George Patton's third army.

 

Hy Hyatt, 95, of Woodbridge, the beloved husband of Harriet Oppenheim Hyatt, died Dec. 23, 2012.

Mr. Hyatt enlisting in the U.S. Army the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and served as a Ranger in World War II, attached to General George Patton's third army. He fought Erwin Rommel at the Kasserne Pass and then landed with Patton at Palermo. He assisted in the liberation of Italy, met the Pope, and was later wounded on the battlefield during the Allied Invasion of Germany in 1944. He was awarded a medal of honor and two Purple Hearts.

A businessman in New Haven, he owned the Shure Tours Travel Agency, which served Yale University as well as Greater New Haven, and also became immersed in real estate as his city expanded.

He was a founding member of the Oak Lane Country Club in Woodbridge, where he served as Greens Chairman.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet Hyatt, his son and daughter-in-law Marshall and Cindy, and his grandchildren Rachel and Adam, and their spouses.

Funeral Services at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven Wednesday morning at 11a.m. with Interment Services to follow at B'nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave., New Haven.
