Minutes after the 6 a.m. crash, Tyron Hammond was found walking to his girlfriend's house on High Street, said Bryan Cammarata, Naugatuck police spokesman.

The accident occurred in the area of New Haven Road and Hazel Avenue when the car struck the pole, causing it to come down across the road, Cammarata said. The road is still closed and could be for several hours as utility workers repair the pole, Cammarata said.

Hammond was charged with evading responsibility, driving too fast for conditions and driving without a license.

Naugatuck Police strongly advise motorists to use alternate routes to avoid the area as significant delays will be experienced.

Updates on this crash will be sent periodically, Cammarata said.
