Police say New Haven Road, Route 63, is reopened Wednesday morning following an accident Tuesday.

The road was closed its intersection with Cross Street and Beacon Valley Road all day Tuesday as workers repaired a utility pole that cracked when a 30-year-old man who does not have a license drove into it Tuesday morning and fled the scene.

Minutes after the 6 a.m. crash Tuesday, Tyron Hammond was found walking to his girlfriend's house on High Street, said Bryan Cammarata, Naugatuck police spokesman.

The accident occurred in the area of New Haven Road and Hazel Avenue when the car struck the pole, causing it to come down across the road, Cammarata said. The road is still closed and could be for several hours as utility workers repair the pole, Cammarata said.

Hammond was charged with evading responsibility, driving too fast for conditions and driving without a license.

Naugatuck Police strongly advise motorists to use alternate routes to avoid the area as significant delays will be experienced.

Updates on this crash will be sent periodically, Cammarata said.

This idiot is lucky he didn't kill anyone. I had a better choice of words ,but the patch won't allow it..Now he goes to jail and we pay for that, we're going to pay for the pole down . Oh , let's not forget the court system needs to get payed by us again. .Perhaps we'll pay for is rehab as well.

Perhaps the accident caused the detour, but the detour was routed by an imbecile. It just looped you to the left until you came out on 63 again, 50 yards from the detour!! How the heck do you get north? Dozens of cars crossed and went up Osborn Rd and like "keystone cops" we followed one another thru dead ends until we came back down Osborn to 63. I finally pulled out a map and was stuck on Beacon Valley Rd to Rt 8 for 45 minutes. Just NUTS!
