At Least 100 Polling Places Without Power, But Elections Continue as Planned

One-seventh of Connecticut's polling places are without electricity leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Hurricane Sandy left at least 100 of the state's 738 polling places without electricity, but Secretary of State Denise Merrill expects ample progress by the time polls open on Election Day.

"I am confident we will have our polling places where they need to be," she said at a press conference at the Capitol at noon on Wednesday.

Merrill said there is no legal way to postpone the election. She's been in talks with Connecticut Light & Power and said that polling places -- most of which are in municipal buildings such as schools and town halls -- are a priority for the utility companies.

There are 100 polling places in the coverage area of United Illuminating in the New Haven and Bridgeport area, but she said she hasn't received an update from the company.

"We have reached out to them," she said. "We just haven't heard back from them."

Nearly 500,000 customers from the two utility companies are without electricity as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Connecticut was faced with a similar situation in 2011 when a Halloween snowstorm knocked out electricity throughout the state before municipal elections. Merrill said she doesn't think that storm made much of an impact on the elections.

"We had the same dismally low turnout," she said.

Voting

State law forbids an absentee ballot being cast late simply because a voter is stuck at home, Merrill said. Ballots will be available from city and town halls on  Election Day.

This past weekend Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy's disrputive power, extended the voter registration deadline statewide to Nov. 1.

Glenn Beck? Really?

The only thing Cheryl said wrong is implying that The Republican Party still has the endorsement of the Catholic Church.
They lost the evangelical vote when the party started endorsing the un-Christian beliefs of notable atheist Ayn Rand.
Jimmy Pursey November 1, 2012 at 02:47 pm
Sorry Don, you're still spouting a lot of BS. And I'm going to call you on it. Apologize to Cheryl and agree to disagree like a gentlemen and an adult.
Then I will let you off the hook.

Jimmy,
In as much as you want to stalk me, and then try (but never succeed) to get me... My logic is sound. If he is not directing where or how the power companies ( or company's if you were writing this) go, then what is he doing? Being a messenger? yeah, that's what I said.... All you have to do, is tell me what in fact his specific actions are, and you can call me an idiot. Otherwise, you are flailing and missing .... ok.... you can keep stalking and trying---you wont succeed--you are not smart enough. Now time to tell me the specifics of what malloy does. hahahahahah you lose again.
Jimmy Pursey November 1, 2012 at 03:30 pm
Luca, you have all the logic of a man who's wandered off into the woods after bingo has finished.
Justin Che Wilkin November 1, 2012 at 03:46 pm
Ella: nonsense!
sebastian dangerfield November 1, 2012 at 04:00 pm
Not surprised that instead of answering a question, you went with the diversion.
You think that fools people? Ill ask again--what is Malloy's specific role in this then? Pretty easy to establish that Im an idiot... name calling doesnt work--but proving me wrong? That might prove to be a bit more challenging. I think you are pretty limited to weird analogies that make no sense....bingo ? in the woods? A guy whose father passed on radiation tainted DNA that allows detection of con men? Whatever. Just let me know what Malloy does....pretty simple for a non-idiot.

I didn't write this.... someone is playing you and me. typical.

I didn't writ this - someone is playing you and me.

I was just thinking the same think Victor!
cheryl November 1, 2012 at 04:49 pm
That comment didn't come from me. I don't spew such hate. Someone is playing you and me - typical. But be a juvenile. All I did was to say that this administraton let our men die. Which will come out eventually I just hope it comes out before the election so you can see just what you are dealing with, with a democratic vote this year. Its so critical. Thats all- whoever wrote using my name is sick.
Jimmy Pursey November 1, 2012 at 05:13 pm
I didn't go with any "diversion"...I quite simply stated that you lack any sense or awareness of what's going on around you.
And I have no interest in answering any questions you may have, because I find the very premises they're based upon to be asinine.

The premise(s) to be asinine.
Really? Asking the role of the governor in this clean up, after being told he plays no role in directing anything? Ha-yeah... Let me interpret your remark Jimmy. -"Um i cant answer that question, because if I do, I will prove my earlier comment to be stupid." Thats right Jimmy--he either is involved or he is not. But to say that he is doing a job , but providing no direction??? Or that he is simply reporting what Cl&P is telling them he is doing...... It has to be one or the other--and being intellectually dishonest, prevents you from acknowledging as such. Like I say, man--- you need to play in your lower level league. My questions require you to understand how foolish you are...and dishonest people, such as yourself, normally just use diversionary tactics...in this case--typical stuff "im not answering, beause its a bad question." hahaha yeah bad question "what does the governor do" really asinine. Again, you just make yourself look the idiot----realize you shouldnt mess with me--you have lost now 27 times in a row. And yes, Im counting.
Jimmy Pursey November 1, 2012 at 06:47 pm
You almost sounded like a grown man for a minute there, Luca.
Try again. I know you can do it. (And remember what I said about brevity. You were starting to ramble again).
JHS November 1, 2012 at 07:09 pm
there has been a lot of tweets saying that if Romney were elected they're be rioting. Haven't heard the same about Obama. Republicans and Tea Party members usually don't riot because they didn't get their way.
JHS November 1, 2012 at 07:13 pm
I'm sure Malloy could find some bags of ballots already filled in to supply if some municipality is short of voters.
Rob Gianazza November 1, 2012 at 07:31 pm
Amazing. All the comments and no clues. We fill in little circles on paper ballots. There is a document reader that records our votes. This is a problem that can be remedied with a small generator. All it has to do is power a few lights and run the ballot reader. It's not that complex people!
Jimmy Pursey November 1, 2012 at 07:34 pm
" Republicans and Tea Party members usually don't riot because they didn't get their way."
Well, Republicans just get the judges their Dad's appointed to change things more to their liking in States their brothers are governors of...so I don't know if that's a good comparison. And the Tea Party used to show up with guns, while riding their medicare scooters...but their primary care physicians would not recommend they riot...if there are in fact any of them left. And the Democrats are not nearly as radicalized as you people make them out to be. Heck if they were I'd consider becoming a Democrat. This country could use some rioting in the streets.

Cheryl- I 'm not rich and I am not a man but I am a Catholic and I resent Obama's attempts to dictate how Catholic hospitals operate - The Democratic Party is hostile to Christianity - I work hard for a living and I don't look for handouts - I vote Republican

Greg, you do of course know that President Obama signed the Budget Control Act of 2011 into law, right? And Greg, you do know that law has almost a billion dollar budget cut for some little government department known as FEMA, right? I'm sure THAT'S going to help with disaster relief...... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budget_Control_Act_of_2011
Jimmy Pursey November 2, 2012 at 03:03 pm
MaryAnn- The Republican Party is hostile to Christianity. Most of their policies are based upon the teachings of noted Atheist Ayn Rand, and they are running a candidate who has taken an oath to help Mormons achieve positions of power, in preparation for "The White Horse Prophecy" which predicts a new Mormon prophet will rule America from Salt Lake City.
JHS November 2, 2012 at 03:14 pm
it is when government gets involved. Probably need a union electrician to hook it up. Yankee ingenuity should make it a small problem but government complicates itl
Looking Around November 2, 2012 at 03:35 pm
Naive. You can't light up a gymnasium with a generator. And are you going to make the election workers sit there in 50 degree temperatures? And have the seniors come in and trip over extension cords? Give them a flashlight for the bathrooms?
JHS November 2, 2012 at 04:23 pm
In NJ they'll be using Army trucks and paper ballots in some places. You can get generators big enough to power a room full of pollsters and voters. It won't be below freezing. Port-o-potties work as well.

MarkR, Thanks for reminding us where energy should be best spent -You are absolutely right.
Civility requires self-awareness, people with true self-awareness realize that it is not a requirement to agree with everyone in order to discuss important topics and learn from others. When trying to make a point, digressing into negativity and name calling is neither helpful, nor healthy. This holds true when responding to someone else's rudeness too.

5th Grade Annex Building
raaji02 June 13, 2013 at 03:06 pm
A disgrace to the children of our community - INDEED! I completely understand this is "a"Read More situation and was not expected and is being taken care off in the best possible way. However, i just dont get why it took so long to address the root cause of this situation. What does it take for the town, it's admisnistration to value the need for better facilities for our children. Why does it become such a daunting task when all of the assesments have come back suggesting the need to move the kids out of the annex buildings? Wake up town of Bethany, it is in our hands to provide our kids with better infrastructure. We should have done it yesterday, when the building commitee brings forth it's recommendations, it is our turn to di it RIGHT!
Chris Myres June 14, 2013 at 01:12 pm
Heather, thank you for posting this article. My child's classroom is the one pictured above.Read More Everything you have stated is correct. Our children are basically walking on dried toilet water. The administration has a good heart but not a good response. They do the 'bear minimum' for the annex kids who have to deal with the daily torture of their environment.
Tom Cigas June 14, 2013 at 04:24 pm
Heather, VERY well-stated. You hit the nail on the head! These annex buildings ARE a disgrace.Read More They provide neither a healthy environment nor a secure environment for the students and teachers. Whether the Town decides to build another addition to the school or to utilize space at the Middle School (and I'm not so sure that's a great idea), something needs to be done as quickly as possible. If we can afford to replace our old Amity Rd. firehouse with a beautiful, modern edifice, we can afford to do the right thing for the kids.
