Bethany Board of Finance Meeting, March 22, 2011

The school budget, upgrading the horse facilities at the airport grounds

  • School Superintendent Tim Connellan attended the board of finance meeting to discuss possible cuts that could be made to the school budget. Connellan said that with current negotiations regarding health benefits and staffing changes, the budget may come in at the same total as last year. The board of finance said they were very satisfied with the board of education’s efforts to keep the budget down.
  • Connellan urged that the school oil tanks be replaced this year. The date by which they must be done is Sept. 9 of 2012, which means if the tanks go into next year’s budget, work would not be able to start until July 1, which would be cutting it close to the September deadline. Connellan also said there is a great deal of other scheduled maintenance that must be done in the summer that work on the tanks might interfere with.
  • The library provided more information to the BOF as discussed in the previous meeting. Bethany’s library, when compared to other area libraries, receives a relatively low amount of funding from the town. This is a function of it being run by an association as opposed to the town. The only other area library that falls into that category is Naugatuck.
  • The BOF voted to fund $20,000 from the Airport Maintenance Fund for repairs and upkeep on the airport grounds. The judge’s stand needs work, which will be done by Lions Club members with the town paying for materials. Mesa Construction will address the arenas, removing and replacing several inches of sand. The amount decided upon was not to exceed $20,000.
  • With the information currently available, the Bethany budget is expected to increase by about 2.4 percent, pending the submission of a few more budget items and decisions about pending capital projects.
