Hamden DMV to Close Next Week for Move

Renovation work on the main building is finished and will reopen Aug. 2.

Services at the Hamden Department of Motor Vehicles at 1985 State Street will be temporarily suspended July 26-30 as staff, equipment and files are relocated to its offices that had been updated during the last few months to meet required building, fire and disability laws.

Services are expected to be fully operational again in the renovated building on Aug. 2.

The renovations were planned more than a year ago and services were relocated in February to nearby temporary offices while construction work was underway.

During the week-long closing, customers may visit surrounding full service branch offices in Old Saybrook at 7 Custom Drive, Bridgeport at 95 Sylvan Avenue, and Wethersfield at 60 State Street.

AAA offices can do license renewals. Check the DMV website at ct.gov/dmv for AAA  and other DMV offices. The inspection lane at the Hamden office closed as of October 30 and remains closed.

However, AAA offices will be closed Aug. 1 due to extensive computer upgrades for the licensing process. License renewals are expected to resume on August 2, 2011 at AAA offices.

Anyone with a driver’s license that expires on Aug. 1 may renew it the following day without penalty.  A new law requires DMV to collect a $25 fee for the renewal of an expired license.

DMV’s full-service offices operate on a Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule, while the agency’s satellite offices and photo license centers have limited hours on those same days.

Beginning July 30 the DMV will also make a change in its phone center. On Saturdays it will no longer offer live customer representatives to answer questions, although pre-recorded answers are always available. Representatives will be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The change is part of the continued streamlining at DMV due to state budget cutbacks.
