Klarides Announces $3 Million Grant for First-in-Nation Clean Energy Microgrid in Woodbridge

Today State Rep. Themis Klarides (R-114) announced a $3 million state grant for the Town of Woodbridge to create a natural gas and fuel cell microgrid that will provide electricity to critical structures during power outages.

This first-in-the-nation microgrid, which Rep. Klarides voted for last year, will support local, onsite energy generation for Woodbridge’s Police Stations, Fire Station, Amity Regional High School, Department of Public Works, Town Hall and Library.

“Connecticut recently suffered through several historic storms, which yielded widespread power outages and compromised our community’s emergency personnel and town infrastructure,” Rep. Klarides said. “This breakthrough microgrid system will provide a reliable source of clean energy for several critical town structures, and eliminates the need to use dirty diesel emergency generators.”

A microgrid is a group of interconnected electricity users and generators that can operate on a constant basis despite any large-scale grid outages.

Klarides added “This project is a win-win for the Town of Woodbridge, using clean energy to increase safety and improve quality of life for residents during power outages.”

The grant will be used to cover the cost of microgrid design, engineering services and interconnection infrastructure.

Woodbridge is one of eight recipients of the state’s first round of microgrid grants, which are distributed through the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The program was established through Public Act 12-148, An Act Enhancing Emergency Preparedness and Response.
