Those golden balloons floating above mailboxes throughout Orange, Woodbridge and Bethany means one thing: another class of seniors is about to graduate from. On Friday afternoon, the high school will host the 56th Annual Commencement Exercise (AKA: Graduation) for the class of 2012.
This year's graduating class is 424 seniors strong, and according to Superintendent of Schools John Brady, "This is a particularly focused class which has committed much to the community in the form of community service."
The class of 2012 had the highest number of students participating in the senior internship program in history, with 115 students in the program. Last year, 60 participated.
Brady describes the class as one that really took advantage of all that Amity has to offer. "We will miss them," he says.
Senior class speakers at tomorrow's ceremony will be Nina Yasick, Rachel Simon and Anupriya Nagarathnam.
Seniors are expected to be at the school at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon to prepare. The program will begin at 4:00 p.m. On-campus parking will be limited to graduate, staff and cars with an official handicapped tag. All others must park off-campus and come to the field or school by shuttle bus. The Church of the Assumption on Center Road will allow parking with transportation provided by a shuttle.
There is a good chance of thunderstorms and showers Friday and according to Amity Principal Charles Britton, in the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held indoors. The decision about an indoor or outdoor ceremony will be communicated to the community via email on Friday. If the ceremony is indoors, the entire graduation will be simulcast into Woodbridge and Orange on Ed-TV Channel 78, but an outdoor ceremony will not be simulcast.
