Amity Girls Tennis Wins Six in a Row, Ranked Fourth

Last match on Wednesday may give them a shared championship

With last week’s victories over Lauralton Hall (6-1), North Haven (5-2), and Guilford (7-0) the Amity girls tennis team (currently ranked No. 4 in Class L) extended its current winning streak to six matches in a row  and improved its overall record to 13-2 (12-1 against Southern Connecticut Conference opponents). The Lady Spartans wrap up their regular season on Wednesday, hosting Hand, the team that gave them their lone loss (4-3). A victory over Hand would enable the Black and Gold to share the SCC regular season championship with the Tigers.

The Lauralton Hall match featured a solid #2 Singles performance by Amity sophomore Dina Weick. She improved her record to 14-1 with a 2-6., 6-1, 6-0 win over the Crusaders’ Mary Kate Fornshell. Weick got off to a slow start and was behind 5-0 in the first set.

According to Amity’s veteran Coach Hal Freedman, “I don’t think Dina anticipated that Mark Kate would hit the ball as hard as she did. She got Dina back on her heels and really frustrated her during the first set. Dina made some adjustments after she lost the first set and came back to play some fantastic tennis during the second and third sets. It was the first three set match of Robin’s varsity career. After a kid loses the first set, the way she played in the last two sets tells you a lot about her.”

The play of juniors Jessica Siedman and Robyn Warren were the keys to Amity’s victory over North Haven. Playing No. 1 Singles, Seidman swept past previously undefeated Alyssa Migliorini 6-2, 6-3. Migliorini had previously defeated Seidman during a USTA Winter tournament.

“Jessica has been bothered with back problems all spring but she toughed it out and defeated Alyssa,” Freedman said.

This win improved Seidman’;s record to 12-1.

Warren (who has been bothered by blisters on her feet) upped her slate to 13-1 with her 6-2, 6-3 No. 3 Singles win over Amelia Hoyt, who also came into this match without a loss. Freedman noted that match was dominated by numerous long points that for the most part, Warren ended up winning.

Freedman also made special note of the play by Claire Foster.

He said, “Claire had a great week! Her play was very steady and with her speed, she was able to run down every ball and keep them in play.”

Foster, who has played both singles and doubles for Amity this spring, posted a 6-0, 7-5 No. 4 Singles victory over North Haven’s Erin Norden.

In addition to solid singles play, the Lady Spartans have also dominated No. 1 Doubles with senior Co-Captains Alisha Roopchand and Bayla Weick, who are currently sporting an 11-1 record.

“They have not yet been challenged by any doubles team in the SCC and they have already played everyone,” Freedman said.

Senior Co-Captain Emma Spiegel, junior Elaine Lettick, sophomore Kayla Barrett, and Foster have all had opportunities to play doubles with various partners throughout the spring and Freedman expressed his overall satisfaction with the results.

He added, “The outstanding doubles play by all these girls has really been a pleasant surprise. One of our keys to success this season has been our ability to successfully play different doubles combinations. Kayla Barrett has played well despite being bothered by a bad knee. This is a really great group of girls who have worked really hard at improving their techniques, especially in doubles. We are a young team but we still have a lot of experience. We are looking forward to Wednesday’s match against Hand and then the SCC and State Tournaments.”
