Amity Regional Hangs On to Beat Fermi-Enfield, 3-2

Joe Bianchi has two goals as Spartans keep tournament hopes alive.

Joe Bianchi had a pair of second-period goals and Amity Regional survived a furious third period rally by host Fermi-Enfield to emerge with a 3-2 victory in high school hockey action Monday at the Enfield Twin Rinks.

Fermi-Enfield trailed 3-1 after two periods, but came out flying in the final session, cutting the deficit to one in the first two minutes and just missing several other opportunities.

"Our lulls ended up in our net," Fermi-Enfield head coach Frank Genovese said. "We need to put together a full 45 minutes."

The spectators had barely settled into their seats when Riley Hine got Amity on the board just 36 seconds into the contest. Avery Boissy tied it for Fermi-Enfield with 2:47 left in the opening period.

Bianchi tallied both goals of the second period, giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead at the second intermission, but Fermi-Enfield came out flying in the third period. Cam Korona scored at the 1:56 mark to make it 3-2, but the hosts were unable to beat Amity goaltender Nick Nuzzolo after that.

Bianchi and Hine had two-point afternoons for the Spartans, while Korona and Brendan Lemire did likewise for Fermi-Enfield.

Both teams return to the ice Wednesday, seeking to clinch berths in the Division 1 state tournament. Amity (6-11-1), which needs to win its final two games to qualify, hosts St. Joseph at 4 p.m. at the Bennett Rink in West Haven. Fermi-Enfield (7-10), which needs one victory in its final three outings, takes on Suffield at 3:45 p.m. at the Twin Rinks.
