This column is made up of news items and updates courtesy of news releases from Amity Middle School-Bethany.

  • School lunch menus have been announced for the next three weeks. (See sidebar.)
  • The next back-to-school night is this Thursday, September 13. "I encourage you to be here by 6:30 PM to get a reasonably good parking spot, find your homeroom, and help support the PTO," writes principal Richard Dellinger. "Parents will be able to purchase PTO sponsored Amity Wear items and raffle tickets for our annual gift basket fundraiser." The school is teaming with Stop & Shop to raise money; parents who bring their Stop & Shop card to Back to School night can register, and the school will receive money for each shopping trip.
  • Tryouts for fall sports begin Monday, September 13, after school. Principal Dellinger requests parents pick up students by 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact middle school athletic liaison / PE teacher Tom Elwell at Thomas.Elwell@reg5.k12.ct.us or 203-393-3102 ext. 1124.
  • On Tuesday, September 11, Amity Middle School students will be taking the SDRT (Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test.) According to Principal Dellinger, "This test is 50 minutes and somewhat comparable to the CMT. It measures a student’s ability to comprehend what they read and answer higher level thinking multiple-choice questions." Students are expected to score above the 49th percentile; if not, they will be considered for additional reading services and parents will be notified.
  • On Monday and Tuesday, the PTO will be collecting donations for raffle baskets; all funds go to support students and teachers.
