Amity Softball Clobbers Law

Spartans outhit Golden Eagles 13-4.

Scoring early and scoring often, the Amity softball team trampled Jonathan Law 13-4 Monday afternoon in a Southern Connecticut Conference inter-divisional contest that was played in Milford.

C.J. Semones led off the top of the first inning with a hopper that Law first baseman Lyndsay Bull found too hot to handle. That error opened the flood gates and Amity proceeded to march 13 batters to the plate, bang out nine hits,  and pour home 10 runs. Following Bull’s error, Emily Fox’s sacrifice bunt,  Jacqui Ferraiolo’s single and stolen base put both runners into scoring position. Jenn Hoffer singled home Amity’s first run. Dana Blydenberg followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Heather Watt, Alyssa Mirmina, Semones, Fox, and Hoffer each singled home a run. Baker and Ferraiolo chipped in with RBI doubles to give the visitors their early 10-0 lead.

Staked to that big lead, Baker (who was making only her second start of the spring) limited the Golden Eagles to only two hits over the first four innings. She had missed the first half of the season after injuring her shoulder in a fall during the first day of pre-season practice.

Amity raked Bernard for three more runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning and extended its advantage to 13-0.  That rally featured RBI singles by Hoffer and pinch hitter Andrea Noss along with a run-scoring infield out from Blydenburg.

With his team holding its huge 13 run lead, Amity coach Bob Purcell began to insert reserves into his line-up and had Ferraiolo take over the pitching chores in the fifth inning. After stranding two runners in her first inning of work, Ferraiolo (who had not pitched in several recent games) could not find home plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. After retiring the first Law batter and serving up a base hit to Jenna Bernard, Ferraiolo proceeded to walk four of the next five batters she faced. She forced home two runs before being replaced by Baker, who handed out two more run-scoring free passes before finally retiring the side. Despite getting only one hit, Law managed to record four runs and narrow its deficit to 13-4.

Purcell said, “We hit the ball hard and got off to the good start. Included in our 15 hits were four doubles and two or three bunts. I was glad to see us finally putting down a few bunts. Once we got the big lead, I began putting in my other kids, but I had to get on them for not playing with sufficient intensity. I insist that the kids that I put on the field have to work hard. Once again our defense was good, but it's been good all season. ”

After dropping Friday’s 1-0 decision to Shelton, Baker went 5 1/3 innings to pick up her first victory of the season. She blanked the Golden Eagles and limited them to only five hits, while walking two and whiffing three. Law did bang out three of those hits in the bottom of the seventh inning but still came away empty-handed. Bernard led off with an infield single but was doubled off first base when Blydenberg speared Danielle Gray’s line drive and stepped on first base to complete the unassisted double play. Shea Lagonigro and Leah Finch singled  and each moved up a base on Baker’s wild pitcher, but with both Eagle runners in scoring position, Baker fired a game-ending third strike past Krysti Kubik.

Hoffer led the 9-3 winners with three base hits, three RBIs and two runs. Ferraiolo added a double, a single, a stolen base, three runs, and an RBI. Blydenberg chipped in with a double, a single, a run, and three RBIs. Heather Watt and Mirmina each contributed  two base hits, a run, and an RBI.

While she was the losing pitcher and saw her record drop to 1-10, Bernard singled twice and scored a run.  Heather Hudak also accounted for two of the Devonites’ eight hits. With the inter-divisional loss to Amity, Coach Melanie Paolini’s girls saw their slate slip to 1-11.
