Amity Volleyball Now 2-0

Lady Spartans trounce North Haven, are set to host West Haven tonight.

For the second match in a row, clutch serving by senior Co-Captain Caitlyn Strona was instrumental in a victory by the Amity girls volleyball team. Last week she knocked down nine consecutive serves in the fourth game of the Lady Spartans’ 3-1 victory over Mercy. On Friday, Strona had what Coach Paul Thees labeled “a fantastic match” as she again came off the bench to put home all 24 of her serves (including five aces) and led her team to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-17) Southern Connecticut Conference inter-divisional romp past North Haven.

According to Thees, “We played quite well against an opponent that was weaker than Mercy. Mercy was able to pass the ball and set up some hits. North Haven was not a good passing team and as a result, didn’t generate much offense. On top of that, they weren’t very big or very athletic. As a team we were good on 93% of our serves, which is an improvement over how we served against Mercy.”

He added, “Caitlyn is a very quiet girl but is really well liked by her teammates. That’s why they chose her to be one of their captains.  She isn’t concerned that she doesn’t start. She knows and accepts her role as a server/back row specialist.”
