Field Hockey Wins Against Sacred Heart, Takes a Hit from Branford

Coach Sara Hale: "We were in the right positions when we went on the attack."

Alli Kramer’s goal with eight minutes, 32 seconds left in overtime, gave the Amity field hockey team a 1-0 Southern Connecticut Conference overtime victory over Sacred Heart Monday afternoon in Hamden. Kramer cashed in on a pass from Danielle Leibowitz.

According to Coach Sara Hale, “We played really well against Sacred Heart. We played good defense but most of the game was played in our offensive end of the field. Fundamentally, our play was much better. We were in the right positions when we went on the attack. We tried hard but unfortunately, couldn’t capitalize on our scoring opportunities.”

Pacer netminder Erin Hills stopped 12 Lady Spartan shots.

The loss drooped Sacred Heart’s record to 1-2.

Amity was on the road again on Tuesday afternoon but this time dropped a 3-0 SCC decision to Branford, one of the traditional field hockey powers in the greater new Haven area.

The 3-2 Hornets outshot Amity 21-2. They cashed in twice in the first half as Caroline Murphy and Erica McLean both beat Amity goalie Hannah  Bercovici. Murphy scored again with 4 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the second half.

Bercovici ended up making a dozen saves. Her Branford counterpart, Jenna Limone was called upon to stop only 1 Lady Spartan shot.

“Branford really didn’t outplay us. We were on offense a lot during the match. Even when we were down 2-0, we were still fighting to move the ball and trying to score. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t get the ball into the net. I was impressed with our effort. Now, we have to find some extra effort to score when we are on the attack.”

Hale praised the play of defender Alicia Cardella, all of her midfielders, and Kramer.

After splitting these two contests, Amity’s record is 2-3.
The Black and Gold continue their road trip as they visit Lyman Hall Friday at 3:35 PM and then are at Fairfield-Ward on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
