Notes In A Nutshell: Amity Board of Ed

Britton delivers good news, Dellinger shares vacation photos


The Amity Board of Education met in the Presentation Room at Amity Monday evening.

• Among the information that was shared, Charles Britton offered some good news in his Principal's Report.

He said the drug search on May 3 involved 10 K-9s and resulted in four false-positive alerts.

Britton said the drug sniffing dogs hit on two backpacks and two cars, but no illegal substances were found.

•  This year more students took the AP exams than last year. In all 615 students took the exams at a cost of $91 per test.

• Last year, 65 seniors worked out in the community on internships. This year 128 students will take on four week internships at businesses throughout the Amity area.

• Britton praised the Amity Theater Department for its successful debut weekend with this year's musical Legally Blonde.

"It's unbelievable the amount of work that goes into putting on the production," he said.

Other Board members added that the diversity in the cast also was remarkable with athletes from the tennis, football, volleyball and track team all on stage together showing a whole different side of themselves.

Legally Blonde, The Musical has been completely sold out for the past month. It debuted on Friday and concludes with three performances this week.

• Underclass awards will be presented on May 23.

• Senior Award Night is June 7.

Bethany Middle School

• Principal Richard Dellinger said the Middle School students were lauded as among the top in the state for the Summer Reading Program.

He said 376 students participated and together, read more than half a million pages

• The Spring Concert at the Bethany campus will be on Thursday at 7 p.m.

• The student marching band will participate in the Bethany Memorial Day Parade.

• Sixth graders will come to the Middle School for orientation.

• Holocaust survivor Anita Schorr will tell students at Bethany Middle School about her experiences as a European Jew under Hitler's rule. 

• A highlight of  Dellinger's presentation was the information he shared about his recent trip to China with four adults  and 22 students. He shared a slide show of his personal photographs and told the Board that the students will post their photos on the Internet using a special computer program over which they will narrate their favorite experiences from the trip.
