Six Games Into the Season Girls Soccer is Undefeated

Coach Owen Quigley: "It was a great team performance."

With two wins and a tie in its last three games, the Amity girls soccer team remains undefeated with a 4-0-2 record. Following a 1-1 stand-off with Shelton, Coach Owen Quigley’s booters defeated Southern Connecticut Conference rivals, Lyman Hall (7-1) and Cheshire (1-0).

Following a scoreless first half, the Gaelettes took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick early in the second half. Later in the same session Allison Maier put a cross in front of the Shelton goal and Isabella Bierezowiez poked the ball home.

According to Quigley, “We played well and were the better team in the first half. Their goalie did a good job but it’s a game we should have won.”

Amity outshot the Gaelettes 14-13. Amity netminder Zowie Reed stopped seven Shelton shots.

Quigley singled out defender Tara Ramierez, midfielder Cassie Giza, Maier, and Reed for their play against Shelton.

The Lady Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 first half lead over Lyman Hall and then cruised home with their 7-1 SCC Housatonic Division win.

“We moved the ball well against Lyman Hall and played well as a team,” Quigley said.

Giza scored twice for the winners. Maeghan Howard added a goal and two assists. Maier chipped in with a goal and an assist. Bierezowiez, Samantha Woodward, and Grace Horelich also found the net for Amity, which outshot the losers by a commanding 27-3 margin.

Maier scored the game’s only goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over previously undefeated Cheshire as she cashed in at the 39 minute, 24 second mark of the second half on a cross from Bierezowiez. The Amity victory snapped the Rams’ five game winning streak and dropped its record to 5-1.

Noting his team outplayed the Rams and outshot them 17-6, Quigley made special note of the performances of Howard, Ramierez, defenders Maddi Dillert, Tabitha Brown, and C.J. Simones as well as Woodward, Bierezowiez, and Kate Simon.

Quigley added, “We won the game in midfield by shutting down Cheshire’s game. Maeghan Howard stopped everything. It was a great team performance.”

Cheshire goalie Natalie Reynolds had to stop 14 shots while Reed blocked five Ram tries on goal.
