Amity Boys Track Continues Its Winning Ways

Team defeat Shelton and Sheehan in last week's meets.

Strong showings by Dave Karabinos and the throwing team  were keys to success as  the Amity boys track and field team defeated both Shelton and Sheehan by identical 95-55 scores last week in a key Southern Connecticut Conference-Housatonic Division meet last week at Sim Field in Woodbridge.

Taylor Tambis (137-feet 3-inches), Mike DeLorma (106-6), and Charles Dunn (104-0) swept the discus. Tambis also won the javelin with a heave of 156-7. Dunn (48-5 ¾) and Jehanzeb Kayani (41-11) went 1-2 in the shot put. Dave Karabinos claimed the triple jump with a personal best leap of 44-11 1/2, and the long jump (20-6). He also added a second place time of 16.42 seconds in the 110 meter high hurdles.

“Dave is an outstanding athlete and is only a sophomore,” Coach Thom Jacobs said. “He’s one of our guys that has stayed healthy this spring. With all of our other injuries, we’ve had to move him from one event to another as we’ve needed him. He’s become an invaluable member of our team. His 44-11 ½ is the second longest triple jump in school history. He’s closing in on the school record and it’s only a matter of time before he breaks it.”

Other overall Amity winners include: Jesse Sanchez (300 intermediate hurdles—42.02), Dean Bhatt (800—2:02.91), Jack Dunleavy (3200—10:17.6), and Grant Watkins (high jump—6-0).

With these two victories, Amity is now 9-0 and has extended its consecutive meet winning streak to 76 in a row—dating back to April, 2004. A victory later this week against Cheshire would clinch the Housy crown and complete another undefeated regular season.

According to Jacobs, “We’ve had more injuries this spring than we had in our last five years, but we are starting to get healthy again. It’s starting to be a pleasure coaching this team. It’s good to get our guys back healthy. We are starting to feel good--getting ready to fire on all cylinders and compete really well.”
