Amity Field Hockey Takes Another Hit

Coach Sara Hale: "We are still having troubles scoring goals . . . we just can't muster that little extra oomph that is needed to get the ball into the net.

Counting its most recent Southern Connecticut Conference losses to Sacred  Heart (1-0), Cheshire  (4-0), and Mercy (2-0) the Amity field hockey team has now gone five games without scoring a goal and saw its record slide down to 3-12.

“We are still having troubles scoring goals,” Coach Sara Hale said. “We just can’t muster that little extra oomph that is needed to get the ball into the net. When we get the ball up to the circle, we don’t follow through or we take soft shots right at the opposing team’s goalie. For some reason, we are not able to capitalize on our scoring opportunities.”

In last Thursday’s loss to Sacred Heart, the Lady Spartan stickers did not record a single shot. The game’s lone tally came from Jillian Lagge with 18 minutes, 5 seconds gone in the first half. The victory ups the Pacers’ record to 3-10-1.

According to Hale, “Sophomore midfielder Maddy Elderidge hasn’t played a lot but did play quite well against Sacred Heart. It took our team so long to get going and then we never scored a goal.”

Due to college visits and assorted other personal seasons, Amity was without four starters when it faced off last week against Cheshire. With four inexperienced replacement players in the starting line-up, the Lady Spartans gave up four first half goals to the undefeated (14-0) Rams. While disappointed with her team’s sluggish start, Hale pointed proudly to the efforts off the bench by sophomores MacKenzie Stuart (defense), Tina Glusad (forward), Morgan Howard (defense), and Eldgeridge.

She said, “I’m very proud of how well the four sophomores performed. They stepped up and were really ready to play. They made some very nice passes that unfortunately were not converted into goals.”

Despite her team’s inability to score against Mercy on Monday afternoon in Middletown, Hale said, “We passed the ball quite well and really played a good, hard game, but once again, we weren’t able to take advantage of our opportunities to score. Our sophomore sweeper, Taylor Borasso stood out with her play behind the goal.”

Mercy goals were recorded by Tori Vickerman (from Maddie DeRita) at

18:10 of the first half and Marissa Romano (with help from Vickerman) 15:06 of the second half.

The 8-4-1 Tigers outshot Amity 18-5.

Lady Spartan netminder Hannah Bercovici made eight saves.

The Black and Gold wrap up their 2011 season Wednesday when they host North Haven at 3:45 p.m.
