Amity Girls Tennis Takes Home Twin SCC Crowns

The team is celebrating its first ever SCC championship.

For the second time in a week, the Amity girls tennis team defeated Hand. Last Tuesday, the Lady Spartans toppled the previously undefeated Tigers 5-2 to win the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) regular season championship. On Friday, the Amity netters (now 17-2) duplicated that feat.

Their 4-3 win over 16-2 Hand came in the Finals of the SCC Championship Tournament and gives Coach Harold Freedman’s girls the twin SCC crowns. It is the first time the Black and Gold have ever won the SCC girls tennis tournament.

Amity’s Jessica Seidman and her Tiger No. 1 singles opponent Taylor Fay met for the third time this spring. Each girl had won a previous match. Fay narrowly claimed the rubber match 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

According to Freedman, “The most contentious contest came between Jessica and Taylor at No. 1 singles. Having defeated Taylor in straight sets earlier in the week, Jessica was determined to continue her winning streak. Taylor won the first set 6-4 with a net rushing strategy, but Jessica came right back and dug in to grind out a 5-2 lead in the second set. While she was on the verge of closing out and winning the second set, Taylor battled back and managed to even the score at 6-6. She eventually closed out the set and the match in a hard-fought 8-6 tie breaker. These two junior rivals played some of the best tennis seen in the SCC for many years.”

With her clutch victory, Fay was awarded the tournament’s Outstanding Performer Trophy.

Amity swept the three remaining singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. In No. 2 singles, Dina Weick defeated Rachel Petrini 6-2, 6-1. It was the same story for Robyn Warren in No. 3 singles as she easily put away Gabby Diotelevi 6-1, 6-0. Claire Foster similarly overwhelmed Megan Sosensky 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

“Dina Weick played a very smart No. 2 singles match against hard-hitting Rachel Petrini of Hand. She completed a three-match sweep of their season rivalry. Robyn dominated Gabby Diotelevi at No. 3 singles, avenging her hard fought loss to Gabby in the decisive match of last year’s SCC Championship finals. Robyn was determined to put us over the top and throughout the season, was eagerly awaiting her chance for a rematch. Our unsung hero was freshman Claire Foster, who moved into the No. 4 singles slot just two weeks ago. She proceeded to go undefeated in our most important matches at the end of the regular season. She dominated Megan Sosensky 6-1, 6-2 from start to finish and earned us a very critical point,” Freedman said.

Amity’s SCC undefeated No. 1 doubles team of Alisha Roopchand and Bayla Weick finished the job for the Lady Spartans with their 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over the Tigers’ Callie Swiggett and Nicole Cahill.

Freedman added, “Alisha and Bayla are two of our three co-captains and provided both the leadership and motivation our team needed to win its first SCC Girls Tennis Tournament.”

Hand claimed both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Katherine Eastwopod and Nicole Brink defeated Kayla Barrett and Elaine Lettick 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. It was the same story at No. 3 doubles as Tigers Auxe Heckle and Claudia Lohn defeated Jordie Hershkowitz and Stephanie Foster 6-4, 6-2.
