Amity Girls Track Setting New Records

Currently 7-0, team putting in a "real team effort."

Two school records were set on Saturday when the Amity girls outdoor track team participated in the annual Lindy Remigino Invitational in New Britain. Kate Simon placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 36-feet 8-inces, which erased the old Amity mark of 36-2 ¼ set by Lynn Jones in 1995. Allison Barwise’s triple jump school record of 36-1/4 (which she set in 2009) was replaced by Alexa Eldracher’s sixth place 36-1.  She also legged a sixth place 16-4 in the long jump.

Cynthia Greenberg’s 4-10 was good for sixth place in the high jump. The Lady Spartans’s 4x100 meter relay (Kaitlin Collins, Allison Maier, Eldracher, and Rachel DePalma rang up a fourth place time of 51.11. Rebecca Race, Maryssa Kozek, Alyssa Doolan, and LeeAnn Beedle placed 7th in the 4x800 relay. Their time was 9:54.01.

According to first year coach, Jessica Beldin, “We did a great job on Saturday. There were a lot of PR’s (personal records. We competed well and showed that we were ready to go into the upcoming championship portion of our schedule.”

Earlier in the week, Amity upped its overall record to7-0 (3-0 against Housatonic Division teams) by defeating Hand 81-69 and also crushing Lyman Hall 121-88.

DePalma claimed blue ribbons in both the pole vault (8-6) and the 400 (1:00.56). Collins won the 100 high hurdles (17.46) and placed second in the 300 intermediate high hurdles (49.94). “We went into the meet thinking we were the underdogs to Hand, but we ended up beating them by 11 points,” Beldin said. “We all knew that the 3200 would be big. I told my girls they had to go all out if they wanted to win that race and the meet. We knew before the race began that pulling off a sweep would be a big deal. Once we pulled off the sweep, we realized we had won the meet.”

Beldin insisted that she was not surprised to see her team 7-0.

“The girls have really come together after the racing season got underway. We have been very consistent in the field events. After each meet, they’ve prepped for the next meet and then put it all. Our team isn’t really deep together and we don’t have any superstars, but we do have some good, quality athletes. Every meet somebody decides to step up. It has been a real team effort.”
