Amity Golf Ends Regular Season With Two Wins in Fairfield

James Tate of Shelton, who made national news with his unusual prom invitation, is conference champ.

Amity closed out the regular season portion of its golf season  last week  with Southern Connecticut Conference wins over Fairfield Prep (158-160) and East Haven  (158-193) in a tri-match  at the Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. Alex Marieb won medalist honors with a season low 34. Brent Marieb added a 36, followed by Aaron Uscilla (43), and Keating Seymour (45). With these two victories, the Spartans closed out the regular season with a 21-3 record—its best record in the memory of veteran Coach George Taylor. Amity also won the Housatonic Division championship with an 8-0 record.

Prep’s final record is 15-4-1(4-1-1) and East Haven cashed out at 10-11-1 (7-1).

According to Taylor, “Our 158 is a good score and to avenge an earlier season loss to Prep by beating them on their own course makes it even better. Alex (Marieb) shot a 2-under par 34 and Brent (Marieb) shot a par 36 on a really good course. Aaron and Keating played ok—not great and not bad.”

Later last week, the Spartans placed second in the SCC Championship Tournament at Race Brook Country Club in Orange. The Black and Gold carded a 322, second only to Shelton, which carded a 317.

“We were hoping to snatch the win, but Shelton had an exceptional day. Our score was good, especially at the top, but not quiet as good as what we were looking for. Our bottom scores were too high,” Taylor said.

The Marieb brothers carded identical scores of 78 and were named to the All-SCC team.  Kyle Barone shot an 84 and Uscilla, a 92. The conference champ was Shelton’s James Tate, who recorded a score of 76. He recently gained national for posting a big sign on the side of Shelton High, asking a girl for a date to the school prom. He was initially banned from the prom by Shelton school administrators but after a very loud protest by many people in and out of the school, Tate and his date were allowed to attend Saturday’s prom.

Taylor added, “Tate shot an excellent 18 hole round but he’s not really the top golfer in the SCC or even on his own team, but he was the top golfer that day. Race Brook proved to be a tough course. The grounds keepers made the greens fast and tucked the pins away in tough places. James Tate’s 76 was a very good score.”
