Amity High Golf's Brent Marieb Gets a Hole-in-One

Spartan golfers remain undefeated.

Since last week was Spring Vacation Week at Amity, the undefeated Spartan golf team was able to play and win a pair of 18 hole matches.  Led by Co-medalist rounds of 79 by Kyle Barone and Aaron Uscilla, the Black and Gold soundly defeated Sheehan 323-368 on Monday at the Farms Country Club in Wallingford. Coach George Taylor also got solid rounds from Alex Marieb (82), Keating Seymour (83), and Brent Marieb (83). On the 111 yard 16th hole, Brent Marieb used a soft pitching wedge to record a hole-in-one.

According to Taylor, “I’ve been coaching golf at Amity for nine years and no one had ever had a hole-in-one before Brent did it. I’ve checked with Paul Mengold (Amity Athletic Director), who has been around more than 25 years and he can’t remember a previous hole-in-one. We don’t have any records or past histories of the golf team, but it’s quite possible that this is the first one in school history.”

He added, “Sheehan has a couple of good golfers but their talent drops off after that. We are definitely more talented, but playing 18 holes when you are not used to it can be difficult. Just walking 18 holes while carrying your bag can be very tiring. It also very difficult to stay focused for 18 holes if you are not used to it, but playing 18 holes now is a good experience for the bigger 18 hole matches later in the season.”

With this Southern Connecticut Conference—Housatonic Division victory, Amity upped its record to 4-0, 1-0 while Sheehan dipped to 4-2.

On Wednesday, the Spartans improved their record to 5-0, 2-0 as they defeated divisional rival, Shelton 316-347 at the Country Club of Woodbridge. Alex Marieb and the Gaels’ Bryan Fitzgerald shared medialist honors as they both fired rounds of 78. Brent Marieb and Barone carded 79s and Uscilla shot an 80. With the loss, Shelton’s record slipped to 3-1 (2-1 against Housy opponents).

“Shelton is a very good team. This was certainly not a good match for them—probably their worst match of the season. On the other hand, it was a very good match for us. We had excellent early season scores on our  course. It’s very nice to see our scores being bunched together. Everyone has been shooting good scores across the board---79-83 against Sheehan and 78-80 against Shelton. I really can’t expect anything more that that,” Taylor added.  “We are playing really well. I have a good group of boys that have talent.”
