Amity Hockey Wins Over Watertown-Pomperaug

Need one more win to reach state tournament

Sam Noss’ goal with 12 minutes, 31 seconds gone in the third period broke a 2-2 deadlock and sent the Amity hockey team on to a 3-2 victory over Watertown-Pomperaug Friday night at the Taft School in Watertown.

Noss’ game winning score was set up with help from Eric Carrano and Wil Dixon. Carrano knocked the puck loose from Indian goalie Trevor St. Onge. It slid right to Noss who was camped on the doorstep and jammed it home.

Following a scoreless first period, the second period saw each team score twice.  The Spartans opened the scoring when Corey Shea (assisted by Carrano) broke free at the blue line, came in alone and beat St. Onge at 2:14. Watertown-Pomperaug matched that goal when Jack Murphy beat Amity goalie Alec Mansfield on a power play at 4:51. The score remained even at 1-1 until Carrano (with help from Shea and Adam Soltis scored at 12:19. That 2-1 lead only lasted until Ryan Basari reknotted the tally at 2-2 when he put Murphy’s rebound into the net at 14:13. Amity Coach Gary Lindgren blamed that score on poor defensive coverage.

According to Lindgren “This was a hard battle. I was impressed with Watertown-Pomperaug. They have a strong team. This was a win we really needed. Fortunately, we did what we had to do and held on to win. We’ve been snake-bit offensively and struggling to find the net.  In our last four games, we’ve only scored six goals. Eric Carrano was the star of the game for us. He had a goal and two assists. He had an outstanding performance and also rallied the troops between the second and third periods.”

Amity outshot Watertown-Pomperaug 31-25. Mansfield recorded 23 saves and St. Onge recorded 28 stops.
