DePalma Wins SCC Girls Pole Vault Championship

Lady Spartans end up in 6th place.

Following last year’s 14th place finish, Amity girls track and field Coach Sean Mahon was quite pleased to see his team jump up to sixth place in Friday’s Southern Connecticut Conference Girls Championship Track and Field Meet, which was held at the New Haven Athletic Center.

“Considering where we finished last year, placing sixth this year is really good. It shows a big improvement,” Mahon said. “Coming into the meet, our goal was to end up among the top five teams. While we didn’t quite achieve that goal, we could have come in third; however, it's very rare for a team to have a perfect day. Those girls that placed (top six) did really well. Rachel DePalma has carried us all winter and had another great meet. In addition, Kate Simon had a huge shot put throw (a third place 35-feet 8-inches) is within a foot of the school record.”

DePalma earned All-SCC honors by winning the pole vault with a leap of 8-feet 6-inches. She also teamed with Cynthia Greenberg, Leeann Beedle, and Allie Maier for a third place time of 4 minutes, 20.47 seconds in the 4x400 yard relay. On top of all that, she ran the 400 leg of the sprint medley relay that also included Maier, Simon, and Rebecca Race. Their 4:35 earned them fifth place.

The Lady Spartans’ 4x800 relay (Race, Greenberg, Alyssa Doolan, and Beedle) placed third in the 4x800 relay. Their time was 10:08.15. Maier added a sixth place 7.86 in the 55 dash. Greenberg’s 4-8 was good for sixth place in the high jump.

Amity returns to action on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for the CIAC Class LL Championship Meet at the New Haven Athletic Center.
