Doc's Race: Don't Forget Your Mismatched Socks

The Inaugural Doc's Race honoring legendary runner and Orange resident, the late George "Doc" Whitney, is this Sunday.

The Inaugural Doc's Race honoring Orange's legendary runner and resident, the late George "Doc" Whitney, is this Sunday, June 30.

Those running are reminded that the uniform of the day is mismatched socks, Doc's trademark style statement. There will be day-off registration for those still interested in running.

The day kicks off at 9:20 a.m. with Kids Fun Runs, and the Road Race & Walk step off at 10 a.m. It will take place at the High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road.

The race — hosted by Warren Street S&A Club, Milford Road Runners, and Woodbridge Running Co. — will benefit The Orange Country Fair. For more information, visit www.hitekracing.com.

Doc, famous for his running accomplishments later in life, passed away on Feb. 21, 2013, at the age of 94. He was also a longtime Orange resident who was highly involved in the community. Click here to read his obituary.

Doc was also well known for his T-shirts with their many sayings. As a fun way to recognize that, Race Director Joe Riccio asked registrants to vote for their favorite saying. The one with the most votes will be printed on the race T-shirts.

The sayings are:

  • No, I'm not on steroids, but thanks for asking?
  • Got an extra cigarette?
  • Run like you stole something.
  • Oxygen is overrated.
  • Mother told me never to associate with fast women.
  • Running from the undertaker.
  • Don't run in my footsteps, I think I stepped in something.
  • I intend to run forever. So far, so good.
  • Enjoy yourself nobody gets out alive.
  • Life lived for tomorrow will always be a day away.
  • If I were a building they would demolish me.
Which one is your favorite?
