Girls Track and Field Outruns Sheehan 107-43

Team is off to a strong start under new coach Jessie Belden

With Sean Mahon’s off-season resignation as the Amity girls outdoor track and field coach, his assistant coach Jessie Belden has been selected as his replacement. Belden was an outstanding track star at Brookfield High and then at Haverford College in Pennsylvania.

Belden’s Lady Spartans opened their season last week with a convincing 107-43 romp past Southern Connecticut Conference—Housatonic Division rival, Sheehan High of Wallingford. Amity took first place in every event except the discus, the 300 meter high hurdles, and the 4x100 relay.

Twin wins were recorded by Alli Maier (100—13.3 seconds and 200—28.27), Alexa Eldracher (long jump—15-feet 11-inches and triple jump—32-7) and Rachael DePalma (pole vault—8-0 and 400—1:03.6). Other event winners included Rebecca Race (800—2:32), Cynthia Greenberg (high jump—4-8), LeeAnn Beedle (1600—5:456), Jane Depgen (3200—12:54), Kaitlin Collins (100 high hurdles—18.01), Kate Simon (shot put—35-10), and Kristen Post (javelin—94-6).

Amity also won the 4x400 relay as Maryssa Kozek, Beedle, Greenberg, and Race combined for a 4:29. It was the same story in the 4x800. Race, Alyssa Doolan, Greenberg, and Beedle rang up a first place time of 10:50.

According to Belden, “We had a great meet and the girls were all very excited that they had performed so well. This meet was a real confidence builder as it showed the girls that they can be a great team as we head into the rest of our season.”
