Golf Team Housatonic Division Champs

Spartans are undefeated in the Housy division.

For the first time since 2004 the Amity golf team is the Southern Connecticut Conference’s Housatonic Division champion. Last week Coach George Taylor’s boys clinched their first Housy title in seven years by knocking off division rivals Sheehan (163-201), Cheshire (in 18 holes--334-348), and  Lyman Hall168-192). With those three wins, the Spartans improved their divisional record 8-0 (13-2 overall).

The week began with Alex Marieb firing a medalist 39 and leading his team past Sheehan at the Country Club of Woodbridge.

According to Taylor, "Our team is stronger than Sheehan’s but it wasn’t a great match. I’d say we played O.K—decent enough to win.”

Kyle Barone and Brent Marieb each fired a 41 and Aaron Uscilla was one stroke behind at 42.

“I like seeing our guys coming in with bunched together scores,” Taylor added.

The loss drops the Titans’ record to 5-8, (1-6 against Housy opponents).

Turning his focus to the Spartans’ home victory over Cheshire, Taylor said, “We needed this one to win the Housy. Coming in, we were undefeated and they had one loss—to Shelton. Although Ben Lasson had a great day (shooting a medalist round of 74) and was two-under par after the first nine holes, it was not a great day for the Cheshire team. Their scores ranged from 74 to 94. Kyle Barone and Brent Marieb led us with 81. Alex Marieb shot an 84 and Aaron Uscilla added an 88. He usually shots better than that on his home course.”

The Rams now sport a 6-2 mark (4-2 in the Housy).

Taylor added, “It was nice beating Cheshire and winning the Housy. I’m really happy for my kids. It was good to see them win. They are a good group and they really make an effort to play good golf.”

As far as the victory over Lyman Hall (at the Wallingford Country Club), Taylor felt that his boys had definitely played better against Sheehan.

He said, “Once again it was not a great match—we played just O.K. Alex (Marieb) had a good score (a medalist 36), but the other three scores were 50-50—nothing special, but once again—good enough to win.”

Brent Marieb and Uscilla each carded a 43 and Keating Seymour, one stroke back at 44.

Following this set back the Trojans are 3-5 overall and 1-5 against Housy teams.
