Kate Simon Advances to State Opens for Shot Put

Set personal and school record at CIAC Class LL tourney

After placing second in the shot put at the recent CIAC Class LL Girls Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet with a throw of 34-feet 11 ¾ inches, Kate Simon advanced to Saturday’s State Open at the New Haven Athletic Center, where she came in sixth with a personal best throw of 36-8. That also set a new school record, erasing the old mark of 36-7 ¼,set by Mary Gosselin in 2000. Simon now advances to the New England Championship Meet on Mar. 3 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The Lady Spartans 4x800 meter relay (Rebecca Race, Alyssa Doolan, Cynthia Greenberg, and LeeAnn Beedle) finished fifth in the Class LL meet with a time of 9 minutes, 57.36 seconds. They also advanced to the State Open where the same foursome posted a tenth-place time of 9:58.54.

“I didn’t expect much more than we did,” said Amity Coach Sean Mahon. “I wanted to do better in the two relays but the girls did whatever they could do.”

In other results from the Class LL meet, Rachel DePalma recorded a sixth place 8-6 and the 4x400 relay (Allie Maier—1:07.8, Greenberg—1:04.5, Maryssa Kozek—1:05.6, and DePalma—1:02.6) rang up a sixth place 4:20.13.
