Spartan Grapplers Place 4th IN SCC Tourney

Bishop, Capuano, and Najmowicz are Runner-ups

The Amity wrestling team placed fourth in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship Meet, which was held on Saturday at Foran High School in Milford. Coach Gil Jennings’ Spartans were led by Tyler Bishop, Brandon Capuano, and Jeff Najmowicz, who all placed second.

Bishop ended up winning three of his four matches and lost to Ed Carroll of Hand 15-5 in the 130 pound Finals. Capuano had the same record at 160. He also reached the Finals but was pinned by Elliott Antler of Xavier in three minutes, 34 seconds. Najmowicz swept his first three matches at 171 but was pinned in the Finals by Stephon Davis of Jonathan Law in 1:08.

Dan Grober placed third at 112 as did A.J. Pyne at 145. After bowing in the semi-finals, Grober came back to outpoint Jonah Lewis 6-2 in the consolation round. Pyne outpointed Clay Callahan of Foran 5-0 in their consolation round match. Nick Litwin split his four matches at 125 and placed fourth after losing 7-2 to Ryan Bannon of Law in the Consolation Round finals.

Looking back at the results Jennings said, “I thought we wrestled well. We had seven guys in the Semi-Finals and pushed three across. We had more finalists this year than we had last year. If A.J. (Pyne) had not been out most of the year with an injury, he could have been in the Finals. Our guys who reached the consolation round, wrestled well. All in all, I’m pleased with the results.”

Amity now moves on to CIAC Class LL Championship Tournament next weekend at Trumbull High School.
