Catcher Michael Moras, a former Amity and University of New Haven star who played well enough to be a New York Mets mid-round draft pick in 2008, was profiled in a New York Times article this weekend about the difficulty of making it in the big leagues.

Moras, like most drafted players, battled in the minor leagues before falling short of the ultimate goal: playing Major League Baseball.

He is hardly alone.

The Times piece focused on a few members of the 2008 Mets draft class of more than 50 players, of which, only 12 are still actively playing under a MLB baseball contract. Three are currently in Queens from that class — Ike Davis, Josh Satin and Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Moras retired in 2012 after playing for the independent Atlantic League's Bridgeport Bluefish.

He owns and operates The Grind Baseball and Softball Training Facility on Boston Post Road.
