Zupkus Joins Legislature's Manufacturing Caucus

State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus has joined a bipartisan panel of lawmakers who work together to improve Connecticut's economy through support of the state's manufacturing industry.

HARTFORD — State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus has joined a bipartisan panel of lawmakers who work together to improve Connecticut's economy through support of the state's manufacturing industry.

Zupkus, a member of the legislature's Commerce Committee, has joined the Manufacturing Caucus. She kicked off her work with the bipartisan group by participating in a presentation and roundtable discussion led by the state's Department of Economic and Community Development as well as the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology and the New Haven Manufacturers Association. Representatives from dozens of manufacturing firms participated.

“There was a time when manufacturing was the undisputed backbone of our local and state economies as well as our job market, but the combined impact of growing operating costs, an increasingly sour regulatory environment, and overseas competition has weakened this critical piece of Connecticut's economic landscape,” Zupkus said. "I'm proud to be a part of a group that strives to change that trend. We need an environment where manufacturers can thrive, and that starts by ensuring that government works alongside these job creators--not against them."

The state's manufacturing industry, Zupkus said, offers skilled jobs with good salaries--a point that should be attractive in a state where the unemployment rate has been higher than both national and regional averages. Lack of opportunity sees many young people leave the state.

The legislature's Manufacturing Caucus was formed less than a year ago. Some of its early initiatives include: developing strategies to reduce energy costs; enhanced training for incumbent manufacturing employees; encouraging innovation by helping startups with access research; and increasing and expanding apprenticeship opportunities in key manufacturing occupations.

5th Grade Annex Building

A disgrace to the children of our community - INDEED! I completely understand this is "a"Read More situation and was not expected and is being taken care off in the best possible way. However, i just dont get why it took so long to address the root cause of this situation. What does it take for the town, it's admisnistration to value the need for better facilities for our children. Why does it become such a daunting task when all of the assesments have come back suggesting the need to move the kids out of the annex buildings? Wake up town of Bethany, it is in our hands to provide our kids with better infrastructure. We should have done it yesterday, when the building commitee brings forth it's recommendations, it is our turn to di it RIGHT!

Heather, thank you for posting this article. My child's classroom is the one pictured above.Read More Everything you have stated is correct. Our children are basically walking on dried toilet water. The administration has a good heart but not a good response. They do the 'bear minimum' for the annex kids who have to deal with the daily torture of their environment.

Heather, VERY well-stated. You hit the nail on the head! These annex buildings ARE a disgrace.Read More They provide neither a healthy environment nor a secure environment for the students and teachers. Whether the Town decides to build another addition to the school or to utilize space at the Middle School (and I'm not so sure that's a great idea), something needs to be done as quickly as possible. If we can afford to replace our old Amity Rd. firehouse with a beautiful, modern edifice, we can afford to do the right thing for the kids.
