Community Service Pays for Two Bethany Girls

In recognition of the positive impact their volunteerism has had on the community, Kohl's is giving each a gift certificate and a chance at a scholarship.

Two Bethany girls are among 42 Connecticut residents whose community service has earned them a spot in the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program.

The 42 youths from Connecticut — including Bethany residents Hannah Medovnikov, 18, and Stephanie White, 11 — will each receive a $50 gift card and recognition certificate from Kohl’s to honor their community service efforts.

These winners qualify for the chance to receive a $1,000 regional scholarship for higher education, which Kohl’s will award in July. Of the nearly 200 regional winners, 10 national winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.

Here's a little information about each of their volunteer efforts.

Hannah Medovnikov

"Hannah initiated, organized and was instrumental in preparing for an Empty Bowls fundraiser to be held at Amity High School on April 3. Hannah has been able to motivate more than 30 NAHS members and several teachers to help create and decorate more than 150 handcrafted ceramic bowls that will be used to help raise funds for the New Haven soup kitchen in an effort to help with local hunger problems," according to a release from Kohl's.

Stephanie White

"Over the past year, Stephanie has taken an interest in helping children with cancer and women with breast cancer through a group she created with friends called 'Think The Cure.' This past October, Stephanie and a friend presented a check for nearly three hundred dollars to the Art Bra of New Haven to help women suffering with breast cancer. This past February, she and a friend delivered more than 80 original, handmade Valentine's to children at Yale-New Haven Hospital," according to a release from Kohl's.
