Event comes up $30,000 short of goal — for now.


Despite the freeze warning and persistent winds; glow sticks instead of candles, all of the volunteers at the made the most of the event and together, raised $80,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Co-chairman George Geane said about half of the participants sought shelter inside the after midnight, but at 4 a.m., during the quiet time, there were young people out on the field playing Frisbee and a large number of walkers on the track.

"It was nice," he said. "Everyone had a good time. We were joking that we should have held it last month because it was warmer then. Next year we'll go back to the May date."

Even though the 2012 Relay did not meet its $110,000 goal, Geane said fundraising events can go on until the end of July.

Among the Relay fundraisers planned in the next three months are a "giant tag sale," a Mother's Day plant sale at , and an event at .
